Re: best and worst ever West Ham managers?
Agree with many on here that John Lyall is the best and Glenn Roeder is the worst though Grant is very close behind.
When I think of the Hammers Lyall springs to mind he may not have always got it right but his philosophy (Ron Greenwood) is what we can never in my mind walk too far away from even though Allardyce has tried very hard to do so he must now see the Happy Hammers beaming with the almost over night change of style and system to a more attacking style.

SDKFZ

Roeder, Grant and Allardyce added together haven't had the stick Lyall got sadly

(and before my stalker pipes up, no that is not me having a pop)

Why on earth would you want to rock the boat, after we have finally started to look like a decent team?

Better the devil you know.

Re: best and worst ever West Ham managers?
Both Grant and Roeder were dire but neither really got the stick that Allardyce has received over the last couple of years, despite Allardyce achieving exactly what was required from our owners.

Cheers for the clarification, for a split second I thought I was going mental

I couldn't really choose Lyall as I didn't really start going until 87/88 and my god did we get served up some shit under Lyall. I used to really think there were two John Lyalls judging bby the way people banged on about him

Re: best and worst ever West Ham managers?
A bit mean on Curbs here as he was unlucky with injuries on his signings

Swiss, if you sign the likes of Ljundbrg and Dyer then o it's not unlucky if they get injured as they'd been doing it for years before they got here

85/86 and won the fa cup (1980)

Re: best and worst ever West Ham managers?
Roeder was worse than Grant as reasons some posters have already cited. Grant at leat signed Reid.

A bit mean on Curbs here as he was unlucky with injuries on his signings. Upson had a good couple of seasons (made the Engand) squad. Bellamy and Parker were also good sigings.

85/86 won the FA Cup?. Have I missed a few years of our history somewhere?

Re: best and worst ever West Ham managers?
In my Lifetime-Best -John Lyall (85/86 won the Fa Cup)

Worst- Glenn Roeder the squad he had should have got us into Europe, for 3/4 of that relegation season we were the worst i have ever seen us wasn't until the west brom away game in April with tricky trev and the face mask we started picking up points but it was too late by then not even Sir trev could save us. Just look at the squad Kanoute when on to win the Uefa and play champions league for Sevilla regularly scoring 20+ goals we had Jermaine Defoe and Di Canio, Cole, Carrick, Bowyer, Sinclair, Johnson etc etc

The problem was the defence he bought Gary breen who was dogshit, and played repka and daily as centre backs comedy defending.

I despise Curbishley the most out of any of our former managers. I know wages and transfer fees were down to Eggy but the shit Curbishley signed nearly ruined this club.

Re: best and worst ever West Ham managers?
Absolutely no comparison between Grant & Roeder

One was working on absolute shoe string with a squad expected to be in and around the very bottom of the table, the other had the finest young squad assembled in England who were supposed to be challenging for a place in Europe

Roeder by some distance

Ron!

Was it Roeder being in charge that kept fucking your guts up? Too much for even the most sturdy insides to take.

In my lifetime:

Best = John Lyall

Worst = Avram Grant - a total fraud
